Pro-choice Republican women, including one of their movement’s best-known leaders, have embraced the strongly pro-life Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as Sen. John McCain’s choice for running mate. –
The Washington Times reports Somewhat surprisingly, Mrs. Palin has elicited enthusiasm not only from
pro-choice Republican groups, but from many rank-and-file pro-choice
Republican women.
The National Catholic Reporter reports Palin was briefly touted as the first Pentecostal to run on a major
party ticket. A spokesperson, however, told the Associated Press
yesterday that although the 44-year-old mother of five grew up in the
Assemblies of God, the largest organized Pentecostal denomination in
the world with an estimated 57 million members, she does not consider
herself a “Pentecostal.”
Her primary place of worship in Juneau, Alaska’s capital, is said to
be the “Church on the Rock,” an independent congregation founded in
January 2000. Palin’s spokesperson, however, said the governor also
attends different churches.
Jeffrey Weiss at the Dallas Morning News blogs Her mom apparently goes to church here. And then there’s an interview she gave earlier this year to Time magazine… Eric Gorski of the AP has some specifics that include … From the Anchorage Daily News in 2006. Her official campaign bio, still up on her campaign site, offers evidence that she didn’t “brandish” her religion during that campaign.
The Dakota Voice reports Though Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family has been lukewarm
at best in his support of Republican presidential candidate John
McCain, today’s announcement that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is
joining McCain on the ticket seems to have finally broken the ice for
Dobson.
The Calgary Herald reports Amid a groundswell of support from religious conservatives, McCain’s
campaign said it had taken in more than $4 million US online in the 24
hours following Palin’s introduction as the Republican Party’s
vice-presidential nominee.
The influx of donations came after several high-profile evangelical
leaders — including Focus on the Family’s James Dobson and Richard
Land of the Southern Baptist Convention — heaped praise on Palin for
being a vocal opponent of abortion rights.
Newsweek reports “Gov. Palin’s commitment to the sanctity of life is not just a
political position. She was advised to abort her fifth and youngest
child when it was learned he had Down syndrome. She refused. That’s
bravery and integrity in action,” Dobson said in a statement. Pro-life advocates and website were buzzing Friday about McCain’s choice.
Wired reports In a 2006 gubernatorial debate, the soon-to-be governor of Alaska
said of evolution and creation education, “Teach both. You know, don’t
be afraid of education. Healthy debate is so important, and it’s so
valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.” (Read about Palin’s views on ANWAR and polar bears on our sister blog, Threat Level.)
Asked by the Anchorage Daily News
whether she believed in evolution, Palin declined to answer, but said
that “I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it
comes up in class.”
The Christian Coalition has issued a statement praising Palin.
Mickey Mclean at World blogs In her speech earlier today, John McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin
acknowledged both Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton for what
they’ve done for women in politics. In response, Clinton issued the following statement.
Harrison Scott Key at World blogs Sarah Palin just finished her formal debut – here are some past videos of her on various issues, and the video of her speech a few minutes ago should be up soon. She’s good. I’m impressed. Here’s some of her first speech as the running mate, and here’s her on YouTube. Here’s video of her whole speech.
Life News reports In a decision that’s sure to unite the pro-life
advocates behind his campaign, presidential candidate John McCain
selected pro-life champion Sarah Palin as his pick for vice president.
Palin, the 44-year-old governor of Alaska, takes a strong pro-life
position on both abortion and bioethics issues. Palin
is the youngest and first female governor in the state of Alaska and
she brings the same kind of reform-minded attitude to the governor’s
office that McCain has brought to the U.S. Senate.
Life Site News reports While Democrats and critics of John McCain began issuing criticisms of
the Republican presidential hopeful’s VP pick for her status as a
relative political neophyte, Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin this
afternoon delivered a confident and hard-hitting acceptance speech
before a crowd of some 15,000 at a campaign stop in Dayton Ohio.
CNS reports “She’s been in elected office longer than Sen. Obama. She’s been the
chief executive of the state that provides 20 percent of America’s
energy; she has balanced budgets; she has had executive experience as
governor, as mayor, as a city council member and PTA. “So she was in elected office when Sen. Obama was still a local
community organizer. He’s never had one day of executive experience.”
