DARPA Aims for Synthetic Life With a Kill Switch

February 5th, 2010

Read the Full Article at Slashdot

jkinney3 writes to mention that DARPA's mad scientists have undertaken a new program designed to create synthetic organisms, complete with a "kill switch." The project, dubbed BioDesign, is dumping $6 million into "removing the randomness of evolutionary advancement" by creating genetically engineered masterpieces. "Of course, Darpa's got to prevent the super-species from being swayed to do enemy work — so they'll encode loyalty right into DNA, by developing genetically programmed locks to create 'tamper proof' cells. Plus, the synthetic organism will be traceable, using some kind of DNA manipulation, 'similar to a serial number on a handgun.' And if that doesn't work, don't worry. In case Darpa's plan somehow goes horribly awry, they're also tossing in a last-resort, genetically-coded kill switch."

A growing number of science students on British campuses and in sixth form colleges are challenging the theory of evolution and arguing that Darwin was wrong. Some are being failed in university exams because they quote sayings from the Bible or Qur’an as scientific fact and at one sixth form college in London most biology students are now thought to be creationists.

Darwinian Evolution Considered As a Phase

January 26th, 2010

Read the Full Article at Slashdot

LucidBeast tips a mind-bending report at New Scientist on the latest paradigm-breaking work of Carl Woese, one of whose earlier discoveries was the third branch of life on Earth, the Archaea. Woese and physicist Nigel Goldenfeld argue that, even in its sophisticated modern form, Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection applies only to a recent phase of life on Earth. Woese and Goldenfeld believe that horizontal evolution led to the rise of the genetic code itself. "At the root of this idea is overwhelming recent evidence for horizontal gene transfer — in which organisms acquire genetic material 'horizontally' from other organisms around them, rather than vertically from their parents or ancestors. The donor organisms may not even be the same species. This mechanism is already known to play a huge role in the evolution of microbial genomes, but its consequences have hardly been explored. According to Woese and Goldenfeld, they are profound, and horizontal gene transfer alters the evolutionary process itself."

An evolving view of God

January 13th, 2010

Read the Full Article at www.kansascity.com

Theologians have wrestled with many answers, but the one that fits best with Darwin may be the idea that God works through the natural and moral world not by initial perfection but by evolving process.

Fifty years ago, another book on evolution appeared in English, “The Phenomenon of Man,” by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Like Darwin, Teilhard was a scientist. He was also a Jesuit.

Teilhard’s book argues that God pulls matter upward through evolution. Even though some species fail and become extinct along the way, life forms tend to become more complex and capable of higher and higher awareness of God.

California Science Center is sued for canceling a film promoting intelligent design

L.A.’s California Science Center will start the new year defending itself in court for canceling a documentary film attacking Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

A lawsuit alleges that the state-owned center improperly bowed to pressure from the Smithsonian Institution, as well as e-mailed complaints from USC professors and others. It contends that the center violated both the 1st Amendment and a contract to rent the museum’s Imax Theater when it canceled the screening of “Darwin’s Dilemma: The Mystery of the Cambrian Fossil Record.”

In many shopping malls, salespeople agree that men represent most of the seasonal stragglers. “They’re just coming in, they’re getting a gift certificate … because they save it for the very last day,” a saleswoman in Rochester, N.Y., told a local reporter.

A University of Michigan study released earlier this month suggests evolution may be to blame.

DUIN: ‘Vianney’ examines an obscure saint

December 20th, 2009

How can an ascetic Catholic cleric who survived on one potato a day become the patron saint of the world’s priests? St. John Vianney (1786-1859), who started out as an obscure pastor in the hamlet of Ars in Southern France, was considered too stupid for a more prestigious parish. In ordinary times, he would have been rejected for the priesthood, but this was post-revolutionary France, when there was an acute clergy shortage for an unchurched and apathetic population. I saw the life story of this unusual man acted out last month at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops meeting in …

Who are the creationists?

November 25th, 2009

Read the Full Article at www.guardian.co.uk

The admirable Theos project on Darwin concludes with the publication of a study on how British creationists think (pdf). To forestall the entirely predictable accusation that it’s not science if Christians do it, this research was actually carried out on Theos’s behalf by the ethnographic research firm ESRO. By interviewing 50 prominent anti-evolutionists, mostly Christians, but some Muslims and agnostics too, whose views ranged from intelligent design to young earth creationism, the researchers managed to get a picture of a movement whose most interesting characteristic is that it isn’t one. In fact one of their interviewees was taught at Sussex by John Maynard Smith, an experience he describes as “a real privilege”.

What do scientists think about religion?

November 24th, 2009

Read the Full Article at L.A. Times - Religious News

Members of the scientific community are often seen as doubting Thomases, but the reality is more complex. Even Charles Darwin may have made room for God.

Today, a century and a half after Charles Darwin published “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,” the overwhelming majority of scientists in the United States accept Darwinian evolution as the basis for understanding how life on Earth developed. But although evolutionary theory is often portrayed as antithetical to religion, it has not destroyed the religious faith of the scientific community.

Should Christians Embrace Evolution?

Today, Intervarsity Press (IVP) in the UK publish a new symposium, entitled “Should Christians Embrace Evolution?” edited by leading geneticist Professor Norman Nevin. Andrew Sibley has already posted about it on UD and linked to the preface. Believers in a God-guided Darwinism are preaching that Darwinism is a fact and that the Bible can be reconciled with it. This new book comprehensively refutes both ideas.
