Gay orthodox rabbi nudging Judaism

February 3rd, 2010

SEATTLE — Rabbi Steven Greenberg is not shy about proclaiming who he is, though it raises eyebrows. He is, he says, the world’s first openly gay Orthodox rabbi. And since he came out in 1999, Greenberg has traveled the world, speaking at Jewish organizations, community groups, forums.. His aim: To get congregations to be more welcoming and understanding of gays and lesbians – which sometimes means just helping them learn how to even bring the topic up. Ultimately, he hopes the work he’s doing can, over time, lead to changes in people’s hearts, and to corresponding changes in Jewish theology and law. “By addressing the realities of human life, Jewish law does move,” Greenberg said. “It just…

EasyJet offers free flights for Pope Benedict XVI

February 3rd, 2010

Agence France-Presse

LONDON • British low-cost airline easyJet offered on Wednesday to fly Pope Benedict XVI to Britain for free after a controversy erupted over the high cost of the pontiff’s visit.

The airline seized on a clash that emerged after the pope criticized British laws seen as friendly to gays, prompting critics to point out that the visit would reportedly cost British tax payers £20-million.

“We are confident that once he has tried easyJet, His Holiness will never look back,” easyJet said in a statement.

The airline said it contacted the Vatican on Wednesday to extend the invitation and was waiting for a response.

Pope Benedict, who usually flies with Italian airline and easyJet rival Alitalia, confirmed on Monday plans to visit Britain later this year in what would be the first such trip in 28 years.

But he sparked controversy in a letter to the bishops of England and Wales, saying new British equal opportunities legislation “violates the natural law upon which the equality of all human beings is grounded.”

Observers said the pontiff was referring to legislation that took effect on Jan. 1, 2009 preventing adoption agencies — including Catholic ones — from discriminating against gay couples.

Homosexuals, Christians and Love

February 3rd, 2010

Read the Full Article at George Barna

A few months ago I wrote a Barna Update about our research among homosexuals. Every year I write several reports about topics that make people uncomfortable, and invariably describe some data that people wish were not the case. In this instance one of the observations from the research was that a significant proportion of the homosexuals interviewed (27%) met the “born again” criteria we use. The reaction to that finding was shockingly hateful – not everyone who wrote to or called us responded in that manner, of course, but an amazingly large share of the notes that came in were venomous. A number of emails questioned my faith and salvation. Several outright condemned me and denied the possibility that I am a follower of Christ. I am used to being challenged and am comfortable with debates about how we apply our faith, but the hostility quotient broke the meter after that release.

What is it that so many people in the Church don’t understand about love? How is it possible for millions of church-going, Bible-reading adults to believe that Jesus would have responded with similar hostility toward messengers, much less toward those who have strayed from biblical teaching? Do these church people believe that they are sinless? Do they imagine that they are setting a ideal example for the young people who observe their attitude and actions?

After that experience it has been much easier for me to understand the distaste so many gays have for the Christian body – and why so many young adults who are not gay have gone to great lengths to distance themselves from the conservative Christian juggernaut. From a marketing perspective, it was also a stark reminder that it only takes a relative handful of outliers – at least I hope they were outliers – to undermine the image and standing of the majority.

LONDONDERRY, N.H. — The Londonderry Town Council unanimously rejected a petition Monday night to consider challenging the new gay marriage law in New Hampshire, which took effect Jan. 1. Since then, opponents have launched an effort to challenge the law by raising the issue at town meetings around the state.

Opponents of same-sex marriage want residents to be able to vote on a constitutional amendment that would define marriage. Petitions have gone before town councils across the state, urging communities to send letters to state leaders requesting residents vote on gay marriage.
