Many Christians have bought into the idea that the church is about a few people who are paid to make disciples. But that’s not what Jesus envisioned for his church, said one church planter.

President Obama attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington yesterday. His own denomination—the United Church of Christ—has been teasingly described as “Unitarians considering Christ.” I don’t know how much he is considering Jesus, but he sure is quiet about it if he is. Even among Christians, the president seems to believe in a Christless Christianity.

At the National Press Club on Tuesday, CNSNews.com asked Knox, “You put out a statement saying Pope Benedict XVI was—quote—‘hurting people in the name of Jesus’ because he did not support promoting the use of condoms as a means to control the spread of HIV. And I was wondering, do you still believe the pope’s position on condoms is ‘hurting people in the name of Jesus’?”
Knox answered, “I—I do.”

On a hot afternoon in a crowded, makeshift camp in Port-au-Prince, Jean Junior Cineas sits under a tarp suspended by a broomstick. He shares his faith with five Haitians left homeless after the Jan. 12 earthquake rocked their island nation. Soon, all five pray to receive Christ as their Savior, reports Baptist Press.
The irony: Cineas is the son of a voodoo priest.
“It gives me joy to [share Christ],” Cineas says as he moves through the rows of tents. “I love to do that. It is my life.”… >>

A few months ago I wrote a Barna Update about our research among homosexuals. Every year I write several reports about topics that make people uncomfortable, and invariably describe some data that people wish were not the case. In this instance one of the observations from the research was that a significant proportion of the homosexuals interviewed (27%) met the “born again” criteria we use. The reaction to that finding was shockingly hateful – not everyone who wrote to or called us responded in that manner, of course, but an amazingly large share of the notes that came in were venomous. A number of emails questioned my faith and salvation. Several outright condemned me and denied the possibility that I am a follower of Christ. I am used to being challenged and am comfortable with debates about how we apply our faith, but the hostility quotient broke the meter after that release.
What is it that so many people in the Church don’t understand about love? How is it possible for millions of church-going, Bible-reading adults to believe that Jesus would have responded with similar hostility toward messengers, much less toward those who have strayed from biblical teaching? Do these church people believe that they are sinless? Do they imagine that they are setting a ideal example for the young people who observe their attitude and actions?
After that experience it has been much easier for me to understand the distaste so many gays have for the Christian body – and why so many young adults who are not gay have gone to great lengths to distance themselves from the conservative Christian juggernaut. From a marketing perspective, it was also a stark reminder that it only takes a relative handful of outliers – at least I hope they were outliers – to undermine the image and standing of the majority.

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., Feb. 2 /Christian Newswire/ — Churches are constructing more modern buildings despite the fact that surveys show that the unchurched are attracted to more traditional, cathedral-like design. House church leader Ken Eastburn commented saying attracting unbelievers is the wrong goal entirely, “Not only are churches missing the boat in what the unchurched want, but they are also missing the purpose of thei Source: .W

If Jesus were on earth today, he would ask why the Church of England still has 26 of its bishops in Britain’s unelected upper chamber of parliament, the House of Lords, a British commentator on Christian affairs has said, reports Ecumenical News International.
Jonathan Bartley was speaking during a debate held in the British Parliament’s building, and organized by the Labour Humanist Group, on whether Anglican bishops from England’s established church (the Church of England) should be evicted… >>

LOS ANGELES – Pastors have long competed with the NFL on Sundays, but this season a hipster megachurch is turning the tables with a 30-second ad that could muscle its way into that all holiest of sporting events: the Super Bowl. Mosaic, a 3,000-member megachurch, is one of six finalists in the Doritos' "Crash the Super Bowl" challenge with a lighthearted spoof that plays off the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If the church's ad, titled "Casket," is among the top three vote-getters in an online playoff, it will air on Feb. 7 during the Super Bowl. If the commercial ranks in the top three most-popular ads among viewers, it could win its creators either $400,000, $600,000 or…

From the moment Jesus proclaimed himself divine, preaching in the synagogue in Nazareth (Luke 4:14-30), people tried to kill him, and the message. All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff. (Luke 4:28,29) For three years he was frequently confronted by angry mobs looking to stone him. Eventually, they found accomplices in the Romans, and had him crucified. The Romans were especially accomplished killing Christians. Nero had them impaled, then set ablaze to serve as lanterns for his…

Shore Christian Pastor G. Dewey Friedel has long preached that God will bless believers with material riches: money, houses, and cars. And that God-given wealth will even entice others to believe in Jesus as well.
The prosperity gospel may seem unfamiliar to some churchgoers, but Friedel is one pastor in a growing movement among nondenominational churches.
