Not many Methodists seem to be taking their Bibles to church. I suppose that with the availability of pew Bibles and PowerPoint, many might ask, "What's the point?" Perhaps it's a control issue, but I like seeing the verses for myself and being able to refer to the passages whenever I want. I also like to flip to other parts of Scripture. My church uses the Lectionary readings, and sometimes I'm still thinking about the previous reading by the time they move to the next one. By taking my own Bible, I'm not at the mercy of PowerPoint. (Pew Bibles are like the rental shoes at the bowling alley. They get the job done, but they're not as comfortable as having your own pair.)
Lately I've been pulling out my Blackberry in the middle of the service and reading Scripture on YouVersion. The problem is, people think I'm texting during the worship service! What do you think? Will electronic Bibles become more accepted in the future or should I just get used to the dirty looks?

Haiti is facing a spiritual as well as a physical crisis with the collapse of many of its most potent religious symbols in the earthquake, according to a leading Labour peer and Methodist minister. Even those who have retained their faith in the face of the overwhelming crisis will struggle to find somewhere to worship on Sunday, with so many churches including both the Catholic and Anglican cathedrals destroyed, and many others severely damaged. Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach, superintendent minister of Wesley’s chapel in the City of London, who was ordained in Haiti and wrote a biography of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the country’s first democratically-elected President, said he feared the…

Clinton Rabb was dropped off at the Hotel Montana shortly before 5pm on Tuesday for a meeting with his fellow Methodist missionaries. Moments later, the ground began to shake and the building collapsed. Mr Rabb’s driver was one of the lucky ones: he had got away and was able to confirm the 60-year-old missionary’s movements to his friends at the United Methodist Relief Committee (Umcor). But that was the last anyone heard, until a team of French firefighters systematically picking through…
