Blackberries and Iphones in Church

February 7th, 2010

Read the Full Article at Wesley Report

Blackberry Not many Methodists seem to be taking their Bibles to church. I suppose that with the availability of pew Bibles and PowerPoint, many might ask, "What's the point?" Perhaps it's a control issue, but I like seeing the verses for myself and being able to refer to the passages whenever I want. I also like to flip to other parts of Scripture. My church uses the Lectionary readings, and sometimes I'm still thinking about the previous reading by the time they move to the next one. By taking my own Bible, I'm not at the mercy of PowerPoint. (Pew Bibles are like the rental shoes at the bowling alley. They get the job done, but they're not as comfortable as having your own pair.)

Lately I've been pulling out my Blackberry in the middle of the service and reading Scripture on YouVersion. The problem is, people think I'm texting during the worship service! What do you think? Will electronic Bibles become more accepted in the future or should I just get used to the dirty looks?
