Not many Methodists seem to be taking their Bibles to church. I suppose that with the availability of pew Bibles and PowerPoint, many might ask, "What's the point?" Perhaps it's a control issue, but I like seeing the verses for myself and being able to refer to the passages whenever I want. I also like to flip to other parts of Scripture. My church uses the Lectionary readings, and sometimes I'm still thinking about the previous reading by the time they move to the next one. By taking my own Bible, I'm not at the mercy of PowerPoint. (Pew Bibles are like the rental shoes at the bowling alley. They get the job done, but they're not as comfortable as having your own pair.)
Lately I've been pulling out my Blackberry in the middle of the service and reading Scripture on YouVersion. The problem is, people think I'm texting during the worship service! What do you think? Will electronic Bibles become more accepted in the future or should I just get used to the dirty looks?

(AP) – LEXINGTON, Ky. – It happened early last summer. The desire to help bumped up against an easy way to reach out. The Church at Athens had an empty parsonage. Lots of people were losing their homes. Maybe, the Rev. Roger Ellis thought, the church could offer to let families use the space while they got back on their feet. “We sort of sketched the idea out on a napkin,” he said. He presented it to the congregation, and after a few technical questions about stuff like insurance, it was approved unanimously by the small…

Many Christians have bought into the idea that the church is about a few people who are paid to make disciples. But that’s not what Jesus envisioned for his church, said one church planter.

The Archbishop of Canterbury spoke yesterday at a conference at Church House. Afterwards a young journalist, Sergei Blair, an intern with Religious Intelligence, asked him about John Terry. The Archbishop said: 'Clearly, a lot of people think there isn't a problem there and that’s
a pity because adultery is adultery. It’s a shame that we lost that
sense that faithfulness matters. I’d like to see it back.'
Listen to the file here.
Lucy Bannerman went to Oxshott and spoke to Terry's vicar, Jeremy Cresswell. Read more about the Archbishop's comments at Religious Intelligence.

Everyone has become frozen in a sea of fear. If you are Muslim, you fear what Christians will say; and if you are Christian, you fear what Muslims will say. And even worse, both fear that their coreligionists will think they have let them and their faith down. But if we really want solve our problems, we should be mature and objective enough to apportion blame where it properly belongs without fear of anything. When news of the Jos crisis filtered out, one could have said what John Pilger said of Palestine during the recent Israeli offensive: “A genocide is engulfing the people of Gaza while a silence engulfs its bystanders.” In private, all leaders complain bitterly; but in public they try to outdo each other in being politically correct.

The nation got a rare glimpse into President Obama’s private faith Thursday when he told lawmakers gathered at the National Prayer Breakfast that religion can help them overcome differences and tackle political problems the same way Americans come together in the wake of disaster. “Through faith, but not through faith alone, we can unite people to serve the common good,” Mr. Obama said. “It is this spirit of civility that we are called to take up when we leave here today. That’s what I’m praying for.” Mr. Obama appeared at the breakfast, a Washington institution for a half-century, alongside Vice …
