For her role in trying to save Jesus, some call Pilate’s wife, Claudia, a saint

Pilate, of course, failed to heed his wife’s warnings and sentenced Jesus to die. Though he famously tried to wash his hands of the act, the result was centuries of infamy and perhaps a few nights of sleeping on the couch.

Pilate’s wife, meanwhile, remains an enigma. She’s consigned to an off-stage role in the Bible, neither described nor named. But early Christians dubbed her Claudia Procula, called her the first gentile follower of Jesus and canonized her for trying to save him.

Claudia’s story hardly ends there. In fact, each subsequent generation has remade Claudia in its own image.

Brokaw parrots ‘Jesus was community organizer’ line

September 16th, 2008

It has become the favorite new party line of Democrats incensed at Sarah Palin’s Republican National Convention speech in which she poked fun at Barack Obama’s career experience as a “community organizer” in Chicago. –

WND reports But today on “Meet the Press,” it was NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw using
the line in an attempt to bludgeon former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani,
who also used his speech at the convention to ridicule the amount of
space “community organizer” takes up on Obama’s resume.

Giuliani laughed it off, saying, “No, I think he had too little a record as a community organizer.”

Video of the Brokaw interview can be seen here.

Rep. Cohen Compares Obama to Jesus

September 12th, 2008

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) compared Barack Obama to Jesus Christ during a speech Wednesday on the House floor, and implicitly compared Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate. –

The Hill reports “The parties have differences, but if you
want change, you want the Democratic Party,” Cohen said. “Obama was a
community organizer, like Jesus, who our minister prayed about. Pontius
Pilate was a governor.”

“The Democrats have lost their minds – and all sense of moral
decency,” said NRCC communications director Karen Hanretty. “Pontius
Pilate sentenced Christ to death on a cross.  So, exactly what point
was Cohen trying to make?”

David Quinn at the Independent [ie] comments But another, more important reason is that Republicans usually save
their religion for religion itself. They don’t make politics a religion
substitute. Republicans might be enthusiastic about Sarah Palin, for example, but they aren’t literally singing hymns of praise to her like the disciples of Barack.
