Why do conservative Christians in the US favour healthcare co-operatives? Speakers at the Family Research Council’s values voters summit this month unanimously opposed any government-run options, which they believe may lead to “European socialism”. But they endorsed collectivism in another guise: health co-operatives. This differentiation is the logical outcome of crass, Christian right exclusivity. Manchester, my adopted home, is the birthplace of the British co-operative movement – a place, at the coalface of the industrial revolution, that experienced extreme inner city poverty and depravation. A place where working-class people, struggling with a multitude of 19th-century problems in…

Church officials acknowledge Small Christian Communities (SCCs) in South Korea have a ways to go toward being genuine, open and active neighborhood communities, despite 15 years of efforts. –
UCAN reports The reason lies in the way they have been organized — as part of
the Church hierarchy instead of believers forming them at the community
level themselves, Father Kim told UCA News.
The former pastoral director of Chuncheon diocese pointed out that ban, or small district meetings, already existed in nearly all parishes and were turned into Small Christian Communities.
“At first, it looked good because of such an established network of ban,” he admitted. “But members gradually lost interest and enthusiasm, as they couldn’t experience God in them.”

Americans should question Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) commitment to Christianity based on his “disregard” for unborn life, well-known black conservative author and activist Star Parker said. –
CNS reports Parker, who is president of CURE, a think-tank that focuses on issues
of race and poverty in America, said in addition to abortion, she is
concerned about America’s dependence on welfare and the consequences
that Obama’s support for such policies will have in the U.S.
“There’s a problem in this hardcore, left philosophy of Barack Obama
that people keep dismissing,” said Parker. “I think [Obama’s social
policies] will destroy what’s left of the black family. Socialism
doesn’t work. It doesn’t work for individuals, it doesn’t work for
families and it doesn’t work for our society. Our society cannot
coexist with socialism.”
