Turning abortion into an online game show

February 4th, 2010

Although the idea is to humanize the debate, none of the characters is especially sympathetic. Each of the three women ostensibly selected from a “pool” of 300 is pregnant under varying circumstances with which viewers are expected to relate. To be clear, no one is really pregnant. The actors are all young and white, despite the fact that blacks have abortions at five times the rate of whites. The doctor, however, is African American — a man who combines the reassuring manner of Marcus Welby with the ethereal wisdom of Bagger Vance.

Crisis-pregnancy centers to be gagged?

February 2nd, 2010

Read the Full Article at www.wnd.com

Two hot-button issues – abortion and free speech – are clashing in Washington state, as lawmakers attempt to regulate what is said in crisis pregnancy centers.

About 250 people packed the chambers of the state’s Senate Health and Long-Term Care Committee earlier this week for a hearing on Senate Bill 6452, a proposed law that requires crisis pregnancy center counselors to communicate only “medically and scientifically accurate” reproductive health information – even though what is “accurate” has been hotly contested, even in the committee’s chambers.

The bill’s sponsor, State Sen. Rodney Tom, D-Medina, for example, backed by a doctor from the University of Washington, claimed that in some cases, center volunteers have misled women to believe that abortion increases their risk of developing ovarian cancer.

National Organization for Women president Terry O’Neill said she was relieved that Roeder was going to jail, probably for life. But she was concerned about District Judge Warren Wilbert’s decision to entertain the possibility of lesser
charges, even though he ultimately didn’t allow the jury to consider those charges.

Many Successful Gay Marriages Share an Open Secret

January 29th, 2010

Read the Full Article at www.nytimes.com

Love brought the middle-age couple together — they wed during California’s brief legal window for same-sex marriage. But they knew from the beginning that their bond would be forged on their own terms, including what they call “play” with other women.

As the trial phase of the constitutional battle to overturn the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage concludes in federal court, gay nuptials are portrayed by opponents as an effort to rewrite the traditional rules of matrimony. Quietly, outside of the news media and courtroom spotlight, many gay couples are doing just that, according to groundbreaking new research.
