Blackberries and Iphones in Church

February 7th, 2010

Read the Full Article at Wesley Report

Blackberry Not many Methodists seem to be taking their Bibles to church. I suppose that with the availability of pew Bibles and PowerPoint, many might ask, "What's the point?" Perhaps it's a control issue, but I like seeing the verses for myself and being able to refer to the passages whenever I want. I also like to flip to other parts of Scripture. My church uses the Lectionary readings, and sometimes I'm still thinking about the previous reading by the time they move to the next one. By taking my own Bible, I'm not at the mercy of PowerPoint. (Pew Bibles are like the rental shoes at the bowling alley. They get the job done, but they're not as comfortable as having your own pair.)

Lately I've been pulling out my Blackberry in the middle of the service and reading Scripture on YouVersion. The problem is, people think I'm texting during the worship service! What do you think? Will electronic Bibles become more accepted in the future or should I just get used to the dirty looks?

By Yolande Knell BBC News, Cairo Worshippers arriving for mass at St Mary's Church in central Cairo say they were shocked but not surprised by a deadly attack against Coptic Christians in southern Egypt earlier this month. "Copts have been suffering for a long time," comments Magda accompanying her teenage son to the service. "There have been a lot of tensions between Christians and Muslims, particularly in Upper Egypt, and a lot of attacks." A Biblical View of Disasters Like Haiti

January 25th, 2010

Read the Full Article at thehiddenmanna.org

I’ve been bothered by some of the news headlines, editorials and other reactions to Pat Roberson’s recent comment that Haiti’s tragic earthquake calamity is connected with their long history of demonic worship. There seems to be a disagreement about whether Robertson  has his facts right about a pact with the devil, but there is no denying the demon worship that inundates this tiny nation. (Also see here).

My concern is that some people seem to use a small slice of Biblical truth to build a theology not only of “natural” disasters but of the way Christians are supposed to react.
